MOST WANTED: The Top 10 Worst Things to Spill on Carpet

MOST WANTED: The Top 10 Worst Things to Spill on Carpet

Carpet Spills

There are just some stains that are the absolute enemy of the carpet. Whether because of stains or odors, some of our most favourite everyday items can actually do the most damage.  Here is our countdown of the top 10 enemies of your carpet:

The Ten Worst Things to Spill on Your Carpet:

10. Beer: While it may not seem like an obvious enemy of the carpet, the problem with beer spills is the smell. While you may be able to wipe all visual signs of a beer spill away, it is harder to remove that distinct odor. In many ways, it is similar to pet smells that linger long after it has been cleaned.

9. Tomato Sauce: Really anything red should be treated as a 911 carpet emergency. The natural red dyes of the tomatoes simply stain fibers very quickly. These are situations that call for immediate action. First, grab paper towel and immediately blot the spot – never rub. Then use a natural and gentle carpet cleanser to treat the stain. You might not get rid of it entirely, but our team of carpet cleaning experts can take it from there.

8. Wax: Wax is hard to remove from carpets because it hardens as it dries and sticks to carpet fibers. Add colored wax to the mix and you are now dealing with color stains as well. If you don’t have immediate access to a carpet cleaning professional, we recommend that you apply heat to the wax stain (using an iron and a clean cloth) and dab with a cleaning solution.

7. Coffee: While so many Americans can’t even think of starting their day until their first cup, coffee has been known to permanently damage carpets. Even one small spill can produce an unsightly stain that you’d never be able to remove without powerful cleaning solutions and tools.

6. Blood: Blood is very similar to wine and grape juice when it comes to staining. Remember that dry stains are much more difficult to remove than fresh, so it is best to treat any stains immediately. The longer you wait, the less chance of removing the stain all together.

5. Ink: While an invaluable tool for our communication purposes, ink was made to stain… paper and carpets. You will absolutely need a professional carpet cleaner to remove ink stains.

4. Nail Polish: Given the sheer number of DIY remedies for removing nail polish, we assume that this is a pretty common occurrence and we would be surprised if half of these solutions actually worked. Nail polish is almost impossible to remove without the power of steam.

3. Chocolate: How can something so delicious be so terribly damaging? Well, chocolate, especially when melted is difficult to remove and doing so can damage the sensitive carpet fibers. So, unless you are willing to give up this sweet treat, we recommend having a carpet cleaning service on speed dial.

2. Red Wine / Grape Juice: Everybody probably knows about the damage that grape juice and wine can have on a carpet because of the bright color. Anybody who has ever served red wine at a party or grape juice to kids has had that “oh no” moment when that first trickle of liquid spills over the glass. While you should treat the stain immediately, there’s nothing quite like the power of a professional carpet cleaning service to permanently rid your carpet of the stain.

1. Bleach: Bleach, a powerful liquid designed to keep white clothes whiter, has its place in the home, but never on your carpet. However, if even a drop of bleach gets spilled on a surface that is anything but pure white, its staining capabilities are legendary and even the best, most professional carpet cleaners can’t help. We recommend that you store your bleach somewhere with tiled flooring.

While we recommend you pre-treat any stains, especially the most serious of stains, leave the heavy cleaning to us! That’s our job and we love it.

Pets & Carpets: Not a match made in heaven

pets stains spotless flooring carpet cleaning league city

Pets, smoke and red wine might be the three worst foes for any household carpet and yet we’re clearly not giving up our pets (or our wine) for the sake of a clean carpet, so what’s to be done?

While you can try in vain to clean up pet stains yourself, we recommend you save yourself the time and the hassle and call in the experts. You just aren’t able to get as deep a clean as a professional carpet cleaner can achieve and that is where the pet stain resides… deep down in the fibres of the carpet and the underpad.

Sometimes a DIY cleaning job might actually set the stains into the carpet rather than removing OR worse, you might just destroy your carpet fibres trying to get rid of the stain.

If you are trying to remove a pet stain or odor before you call the professionals, please DO NOT:

  • Pet stains should be addressed right away – although we do like a good challenge.
  • Always blot. Rubbing will ensure that the stain is ground deep into the fibres of the carpet and could actually make it near impossible to remove.
  • Use chemicals that aren’t compatible with your carpet type and ALWAYS try a test patch before you commit to removing a stain in plain view. Your carpet is made of delicate fibres and the wrong chemical could compromise its integrity.
  • This could compromise and damage carpet fibres weakening your carpet and hindering your ability to remove future stains and spots.

Beyond the Carpet Stain

Beyond the stain itself, it’s the odor that often lingers after a pet accident. You can try to open the windows, spray deodorizers, sprinkle baking soda to absorb the smell, but that odor will likely remain or return over time. Those with pets, or those who have walked into a house with pets, probably know that smell well and know how hard it is to remove, even with immediate cleaning tactics.

Our carpet cleaning system’s powerful and effective hot water extraction reaches deep down into your carpet fibers and padding, loosening dirt, stains and odor-causing bacteria, removing it at its source. For those more difficult stains and odors, we can take cleaning to the next level with specialized solutions and techniques.

So don’t struggle in vain… call us first!

Neutral Cleaner

I specifically mention using a neutral cleaner in this tile and grout cleaning post. Now I’d like to discuss a few things about neutral floor cleaners.

Neutral Floor Cleaner 101

We are going to cover

  • What a neutral cleaner is
  • Why neutral cleaners are great
  • The only downfall of neutral cleaners
  • What surfaces to use neutral cleaners on
  • How to find/get it

What is a neutral cleaner?

A neutral cleaner is a cleaning agent that falls between six and eight on the PH scale. The PH scale is a rating from zero to fourteen. Any cleaning agent in the range of zero to six is considered acidic. Any one that is in the range of eight to fourteen is considered alkaline. Then, anything between six and eight is considered neutral. Seven is perfectly neutral.

Why use a neutral cleaner?

These cleaners are great for using because they are easily rinsed off. Because these types of cleaning agents rinse off the surface so well, they leave behind little to no residue. This is great because it will not create surface build-up over long periods of time. This means your tile and stone surfaces will stay cleaner long and look great.

Neutral cleaners are also very safe. Because they are not very aggressive agents you don’t have to worry about them damaging surfaces. This includes fabrics like your clothes or curtains, carpet, grout, stone surfaces and even the sealers on those stone surfaces.

Downfall of neutral cleaners

They are not very aggressive cleaners. These cleaners will do well to break down oil and get food spots or dirt off of surfaces but they won’t work well as an oven cleaner. For all of your real dirty jobs, a neutral cleaner is not a good choice. These are generally mild cleaning agents that do well for maintenance cleaning on almost every surface type.

When to use neutral cleaners

These types of cleaners are what we specifically recommend to use when mopping your tile and grout, stone floors, any sealed surface, wood floors, linoleum, laminate flooring, and really any type of flooring other than carpet. Use these types of cleaners whenever you’re doing any type of maintenance cleaning. This includes countertops or stove tops in the kitchen, mopping or cleaning spots on the floor, or anything like that.

How to get a hold of some neutral cleaner

You can find neutral cleaners at lowes and home depot in concentrated forms under the Zep product line. Though you’re much better off finding a local janitorial shop and asking them for some neutral floor cleaner. They should know exactly what you’re looking for and be able to point you right to it. While you’re in there you will be able to look at and pick up a whole array of different types of tools and agents for cleaning that you won’t really find in other places.

Recap: In doing any regular household cleaning, use a neutral floor cleaner. They are safe, effective, and leave little to no residue behind. Any maid service such as Sunflower Maids will know about neutral cleaners.

Spotless Flooring Sells Homes Faster in Houston

Spotless Flooring Houston Kitchen CleaningThere’s clean and then there’s Spotless Flooring clean and when you’re thinking of putting your home up for sale, don’t settle for less than spotless. Potential buyers will notice every speck, stain, smell and spot as soon as they enter your home.

While you may think that your flooring is clean, remember that you have likely dulled your senses to the reality of your home. You have adapted to the appearance and the smells of your carpet and flooring, but a buyer might have a different experience entirely. Vacuuming is not enough to get that clean feel you want. Nothing can replace a good deep cleaning by a professional floor cleaning company who specializes 100% on restoring floors, carpets and tiles to their original (or as close to original) look as possible.

A SPOTLESS FIRST IMPRESSION STARTS WITH FLOOR CLEANING

A potential buyer will create an immediate first impression upon entering your home. The first thing that a buyer will notice is the cleanliness of your floors. Any unsightly stains, gouges, tears or blemishes will create an impression of an unkept home. Remember that people want to find a home that is move-in ready, and if your flooring isn’t well taken care of by a floor cleaning specialist, it may lead a potential buyer to believe that they have to invest in new flooring immediately. Not the ideal first impression.

Here’s why you’ll never regret hiring a professional floor cleaner right before sale time.

Smells Better: Everyday living wreaks havoc and delivers odors into your carpet fibers, especially if you have pets. Regular cleaning keeps these smells at bay and freshens the entire house. Remember… these smells may not be obvious to you, but they are there.

Clean Floors / Clean House: There will be an immediate correlation between the cleanliness of your flooring and the cleanliness of your entire home. This first impression will leave potential buyers with an impression that your home is well taken care of, inside and out.

Less Expensive: Many homeowners believe that they must replace carpets with spots, stains and odors before placing their home on the market. Not true. A professional floor cleaning team can return your carpets to a near-new appearance and eliminate any unpleasant smells.

Trust us… while you may not have anybody say, “WOW, those floors are really clean,” they will definitely notice if they are not. Let your home do the talking, not your floors.

How to Maintain Floors After Pro Tile Cleaning and Sealing

Maintaining Your Hard Floors After Professional Tile Cleaning and Sealing

This Tile Cleaning information applies to anybody that might have floors they will ever mop, EVER. Pretty much if you have anything other than carpet, this information is for you.

Things you will need Include :

  1. Mop
  2. Mop Bucket
  3. Neutral Cleaner
  4. Hot Water
  5. Dirty Floors
  6. Fans

If you’re not familiar with neutral cleaners, click the link below to learn what you need to know about neutral cleaners, why they are great for tile cleaning, and how to get them.

—Neutral Cleaners —

Mixing

Start by mixing your neutral cleaner into your mop bucket with your hot water. Follow the directions on the bottle. You don’t want to overuse or abuse them. That will leave behind sticky residues and leave your floors soapy. So follow the directions, use hot water, and mix it into your mop bucket.

Mopping

Next, mop your floors, just as you ever have, mop your floors.

String Mop

Microfiber string mops are really great at absorbing fluids to really pickup the crud from the floor. They also have longer life and wont shed like cotton mops.

Dumping Water

Third thing: Dump your nasty mop water into the toilet. You can dump it outside if you’d like too. I recommend into the toilet because they are self flushing. If you spill a little bit, guess what, you can easily mop it up.

BIG KEY *** IMPORTANT PART

Refill your mop bucket after you rinse it. Use just hot water to mop again. That’s right. After your done mopping for the second time, dump that water and mop a third time with just hot water.

Have you ever washed some dishes and set them in the strainer without rinsing them? Have you ever skipped that part, rinsing them? NO! If you wash a cup, you rinse it out and dump it. You see there is soap in it, you rinse it again and dump it. It is the same principle with your floors. This is why we say to mop three times (once with your cleaner and twice with just hot water).

Tile Cleaning

Fans

If you have any fans put them down. Box fans, tower fans, whatever you have will work. Ceiling fans work great as well but if you don’t have any fans go to your AC unit and click your fan from auto to on. This will help your floors dry a whole lot faster.

Quick Recap

  • Use a neutral cleaner
  • Fill your mop bucket with hot water and neutral cleaner
  • Mop as normal
  • Dump water and refill with just hot water
  • Mop again, dump again, and mop again
  • Set fans out to or at least get the air circulating.

Thanks for visiting us. If you found this how to for tile cleaning informative, please share it with your friends. We’d really appreciate it. Have a good one.

Why does my carpet get dirty so fast after cleaning?

Every now and again Spotless Flooring receives a call and someone asks “Why does my carpet get dirty so fast after cleaning?”

It’s quite a common question and happens to many people who receive multiple cleanings every year. Spotless Flooring has three simple answers:

Your Attention to Stay Clean

You have invested your time, money, and let a stranger into your home to do the work of cleaning your carpet. Now that you’ve invested so much into it, you want to see your carpet stay clean. Simply put, you pay more attention to your carpet after a cleaning. More than likely after a cleaning you are going to notice all the stains that you didn’t see much of before and every new spot as it appears. This especially happens when you do your weekly vacuuming and spend some time inspecting as you go.

Cleaning the Carpet Up After…

Have you possibly had any changes in your home environment? Your carpet may be getting dirty faster after cleaning because you recently had a change at home causing it. Consider this; Do you have a new pet who’s going outside and in? Have your children had their friends over more often or started playing outside more often? Did your spouse get a new job or start doing some yard work that might be bringing in more contaminates?

Poor Previous Service

The most common issue we see as cleaners is that the last company you invited into your home just didn’t rinse the carpet well enough. Thus they have left some residue on your carpet which causes the dirt to stay trapped on the fibers and preventing your vacuum from sucking them up.

    • The great thing is that there is a resolution to this issue and what’s even better is that here at Spotless Flooring we make sure no residue gets left behind. In fact we often rinse out residues from previous cleaners and household spotters that may have been used.
    • Utilizing our industry leading carpet cleaning wand we can actually see how soapy the recovered water is as it’s sucked out of the carpet. This keeps us informed on what areas need more rinsing and also lets us know when we hit a real soapy spot (common with household spotters)
    • Spotless Flooring will only use the necessary amount of cleaning agents on your carpet. The result is that we don’t apply loads of cleaner to your carpet to begin with and rinsing it out (the steam cleaning process) is easier and more efficient.
    • We are also using the HWE (hot water extraction AKA steam cleaning) method to rinse your carpet of contaminates. This means we have ultra heated high flowing water sprayed straight onto your carpet and immediately sucked up by our powerful vacuum. This provides an incredible rinse while removing all water and contaminates.
    • To top the cake we are also using a rinse agent. This is very similar to what you might be using in your dishwasher. This does exactly what the name implies, it makes our rinsing process more effective by removing soap residues. But that’s not all, it also better prepares the fibers for protector. That means the protector will be better accepted by each fiber making it an even more effective product.

What is a Textile?

Textiles and Floors? No

When I mention textiles in conversation with others I find that most often they think I’m referring to some kind of tile flooring. The reality is that tile and textiles have no relation at all. That’s ok if you thought textiles were relative to tile flooring, most people do. It’s a common misconception and easily confused given the word “tile” is in the word textile.

A textile by definition is “A type of cloth or woven fabric.” That means you probably have lots of textiles throughout your home and didn’t even realize it. And after all, they are not hard rectangular things on the floor. Depending on how specific the person is using the word it can mean any sort of fabric or it can specifically mean woven fabrics.

Materials and objects that you have in your home that are textiles would be clothes, curtains, drapes, sheets, some shoes, non-leather furniture upholstery, carpet, rugs, towels, and many more. Surprised? I was too after I started working in the cleaning business and happened to read about “textile cleaning.” I was confused at first but quickly caught on, especially after doing a little research. Now this is a word I use professionally when referring to upholstery cleaning and rarely use the word when referring to carpet cleaning.

Swatches, another unique word, also refers to “a sample piece of material, especially fabrics or textiles.” Most of you women probably know this word because you have been given lots of these for making or choosing materials. As for us men who are not really involved in the fabric world (most of us) we need a little education before we go to a fabric trade show with you.

Textiles

I know as a man, I was not introduced to this word until I met my wife. One day she went out with her mom looking at craft stuff and came back with these cool things called swatches. Or so I thought they were cool until she got them out and explained what they were. I thought swatches was some kind of desert or some hybrid watches. We had a good laugh until I said “Those are some fancy textiles” and she got confused. Then I explained what textiles were and we had another laugh.

Now you have two unique and specific words to add to your dictionary, textile cleaning. Just like Zig Ziglar put it “In a study, every case where the vocabulary increased, so did the IQ.” So learn more words, get smarter, achieve more!

Military Veteran Carpet Cleaner vs. The Competition

Military Veteran Carpet Cleaner vs. The Competition

Spotless Flooring is owned and operated by a Military Veteran Carpet Cleaner. We are in Houston, which is saturated with competition. For years we have strived to raise the bar in service and quality of our services. Upon meeting another cleaner from a different company, we have been reassured that our techniques, philosophy, and capabilities are beyond what the competition is offering. Here is the story.

In some of my off-work time I came across another carpet cleaner. Though, I would not refer to this cleaner as a floor care expert. Through a few conversations over a few weeks I learned a lot about how his company operates. It was surprising, disappointing, and reassuring all at the same time.

I showed my new acquaintance our cleaning van and equipment. His first reaction when I opened the doors was “Wow, this thing is really organized!” And he was right, we have done a lot of small things to keep our equipment and supplies well organized. Then he showed me a picture of the back of his van which consisted of a few small pieces of equipment covered with some hoses all just thrown into the van. Simply put, it was messy and dirty.

I asked him if he knew what all the equipment was he was looking at. His reaction was confusion. As another so called cleaning professional, he didn’t have a clue what most of our equipment was or why we might use it. This was the disappointing part.

And when he spotted our vacuum bright and shining, he asked if we vacuum. “Of course we vacuum and then we use the little crevice tool to vacuum along the edge of walls and around furniture” I said. He responded, telling me “We just tell the customers to vacuum before we get there.” This was also disappointing to hear.Military Veteran Carpet Cleaner

His explanation for the cleaning processes used by his company left me in shock. He told me how short and simple the cleaning procedures were. I went on to explain to him why we do so much more and the effects of each detail.

Him: Yea, we just tell the customer to vacuum before we get there. We go in and spray the carpet with our sprayer then run the hoses in and start steam cleaning.

Me: Right, no vacuuming. We still vacuum every home because far to many homes claim to vacuum or to have a maid service vacuum and yet the carpet still has loads of debris. We know from experience that more often than not the carpet is not properly vacuumed. So we still do it regardless. Then we pre-treat, agitate, extract, place fans, and close the deal.

Him: Ohhh, yea that makes a lot of since. What do you mean by agitate?

Me: You’ve never scrubbed the carpet with any kind of machine? Not even like a floor buffer of any sort?

Him: No. How does that make a difference?

Me: Well imagine washing your hair. You pour soap onto your head and then just rinse it out. Without working it into your hair and moving it around, your hair will still be dirty. The scrubbing part makes a big difference because it works in the cleaning solutions but even more, it breaks loose debris that is lodged into the fibers that not even household vacuums can remove. This makes the rinsing process more effective and with less effort.

Him: Now I see why yall charge so much more than we do. You must be spending a lot more time on each job too.

Me:  It usually takes us about an hour an forty five minutes to clean 3 bedrooms and a hall. How long does it usually take you guys?

Him: We would probably spend forty five minutes cleaning that.

Me: Wow, I have so much to teach you!

At this point in our conversation I realized that the cleaner I was conversing with lived in a different world. Where he may clean five homes a day, I may only complete two or three. The difference is that I know I’ll be leaving a few homes very clean with very happy clients. As a military veteran carpet cleaner in the competitive city of Houston, we all have different ways of getting along and selling our services. His company survives through lower prices (lower quality service) and my company survives through providing great service (at a higher price).
